No Newsnight da BBC 2 (31/5/2012), um bom e didático debate sobre se as políticas de austeridade adotadas hoje na Europa funcionam realmente. De um lado, Paul Krugman; de outro, Andrea Leasom (Deputada do Partido Conservador) e Jon Moulton (um “venture capitalist”). Tal como ocorreu a partir dos anos 1980 com as propostas de “reforma estrutural” nos países em desenvolvimento, a defesa atual da austeridade na Europa é acompanhada por recomendações que vão muito além da questão fiscal propriamente dita.

Jon Moulton: “the issue about austerity here is that we have too large a state”; “if you want growth, you need a larger private sector”; “these jobs will be created when people move from the public sector to the private sector”.

Andrea Leasom: recovery will come when we “make it easier to young people start their own business”;  what is needed is “a low tax regime”; “to reduce corporate taxes, to deregulate to make easier to start business companies”.

Paul Krugman:  “Austerity in these conditions doesn’t even work in fiscal terms”; “Actually none of this is about fiscal responsability, is about exploiting the current situation to pursue an ideological goal of a smaller state”.
